âCan we not do this tonight?â Rhiannon said to Connor, making us all look at them.
âWhy not? Iâve been asking you whatâs next for our relationship for weeks, Rhiannon. Why are you stalling?â
Rhiannon glanced at us before pulling him away. Maggieâs lips were pursed.
âDo you know what thatâs about?â I asked, and she shook her head.
I glanced at my best friend who was looking toward the hall that led to the bathrooms. Hannah elbowed him, and he looked down at her with a frown on his face. Just a few minutes later, Connor came storming from the back and headed straight for the door. We waited a beat, but Rhiannon didnât come back.
âIâll stay with Hannah,â Mason said, even though I knew he wanted to know what was going on.
We left before Hannah could protest and found Rhiannon sitting on the stairs by the back door. Maggie sat down beside her.
âWhat happened, babe?â she asked.
I leaned against the wall while Zane stood in front of them.
âHeâs been asking me to define our relationship, claiming weâre too old to be dating casually. We just broke up.â
âYouâre twenty-five,â Zane deadpanned.
âRight? Apparently, thatâs settling-down age. Iâm not looking for serious right now, and he was pressuring me. We want different things, so what was the point in staying together?â
âSorry, Rhi,â Maggie said, hugging her.
âIâm fine. Just didnât need the drama tonight.â
âIt wasnât that bad,â I told her. âWe can still continue our good night.â
âYou good, Rhi?â Zane asked.
She looked up at him. âYeah. I really am.â
âOkay, then I better get back to Hannah.â Rhiannon rolled her eyes. âYou can try to be nice.â
âI did that at first, Zane. This isnât on me, and you know it. I donât get why she has such a problem with me.â
Zane and I exchanged looks that Rhiannon didnât catch thankfully, but Maggie did. She narrowed her eyes at both of us.
âOh, the way I said that made it seem like I cared, which I donât. Not about her feelings. But I do miss my friend.â
Maggie squeezed her hand as Rhiannon stood and left us in the hall before any of us could say anything else. Rhiannon really didnât care if Hannah liked her. It wasnât in her makeup to do so, but she and Zane were good friends. For the past few years thatâd dwindled to the occasional hangout when Hannah wasnât around.
Zane followed after Rhiannon, and I was left alone with Maggie. I took her hand, pulling her up and into my arms. I claimed her mouth as soon as she was close enough.
âIâve wanted to do that all night,â I breathed.
âAnd Iâve wanted you to do that all night,â she said.
âIâm a stupid man for not just kissing you in front of everyone.â
She laughed and pulled me back down to kiss her.
