“Can we not do this tonight?” Rhiannon said to Connor, making us all look at them.

“Why not? I’ve been asking you what’s next for our relationship for weeks, Rhiannon. Why are you stalling?”

Rhiannon glanced at us before pulling him away. Maggie’s lips were pursed.

“Do you know what that’s about?” I asked, and she shook her head.

I glanced at my best friend who was looking toward the hall that led to the bathrooms. Hannah elbowed him, and he looked down at her with a frown on his face. Just a few minutes later, Connor came storming from the back and headed straight for the door. We waited a beat, but Rhiannon didn’t come back.

“I’ll stay with Hannah,” Mason said, even though I knew he wanted to know what was going on.

We left before Hannah could protest and found Rhiannon sitting on the stairs by the back door. Maggie sat down beside her.

“What happened, babe?” she asked.

I leaned against the wall while Zane stood in front of them.

“He’s been asking me to define our relationship, claiming we’re too old to be dating casually. We just broke up.”

“You’re twenty-five,” Zane deadpanned.

“Right? Apparently, that’s settling-down age. I’m not looking for serious right now, and he was pressuring me. We want different things, so what was the point in staying together?”

“Sorry, Rhi,” Maggie said, hugging her.

“I’m fine. Just didn’t need the drama tonight.”

“It wasn’t that bad,” I told her. “We can still continue our good night.”

“You good, Rhi?” Zane asked.

She looked up at him. “Yeah. I really am.”

“Okay, then I better get back to Hannah.” Rhiannon rolled her eyes. “You can try to be nice.”

“I did that at first, Zane. This isn’t on me, and you know it. I don’t get why she has such a problem with me.”

Zane and I exchanged looks that Rhiannon didn’t catch thankfully, but Maggie did. She narrowed her eyes at both of us.

“Oh, the way I said that made it seem like I cared, which I don’t. Not about her feelings. But I do miss my friend.”

Maggie squeezed her hand as Rhiannon stood and left us in the hall before any of us could say anything else. Rhiannon really didn’t care if Hannah liked her. It wasn’t in her makeup to do so, but she and Zane were good friends. For the past few years that’d dwindled to the occasional hangout when Hannah wasn’t around.

Zane followed after Rhiannon, and I was left alone with Maggie. I took her hand, pulling her up and into my arms. I claimed her mouth as soon as she was close enough.

“I’ve wanted to do that all night,” I breathed.

“And I’ve wanted you to do that all night,” she said.

“I’m a stupid man for not just kissing you in front of everyone.”

She laughed and pulled me back down to kiss her.
